Tompkins was a histortian and Western writer who did everything from 'Gunsmoke' novelizations to 'Roy Rogers' and 'Lone Ranger' TV episodes to mass paperback Western novels featuring the Rio Kid or The Masked Rider (with Blue Hawk). In the late 1960s, Curtis Publishing (The Saturday Evening Post) revived the Masked Rider in 26 paperback reprints of the original pulp stories.
