historic Taos Art Colony
Taos Art Colony entry at Wikipedia
The story goes that commercial illustrator Ernest Blumenschein & artist Bert Phillips were traveling thru the West in 1898 and busted a wagon wheel in New Mexico Territory. They went for repairs to the nearest town, which was the remote village of Taos. Blumenschein was struck by the sweeping landscapes and the diverse Native American, Spanish-American, and American cultures of the region and determined then and there to work as a serious painter. Blumenschein co-founded the Taos Society of Artists that same year, with eight charter members; others soon joined them. |
