"Hyozho"
a poem by G.E. Nordell

when the Ally is present
       Life is sweet
red becomes magenta and strawberry and
       tomatoes and stop signs
even stop signs have their beauty

when the Ally is present
       Life is cruel
little dogs limp and baby tears glisten
       in the sunlight
there is no reason, only cruelty

when the Ally is present
       everything is true
scissors that snick and water gurgling
       into the storm sewer's maw
war and pestilence and famine have their place

when the Ally is present
     Time occurs in moments
each walking step contains
       the squeaking shoe, and
the madlong rush passes by and flowers wave hello

when the Ally is present
       the search is forgotten
the road unfolds ahead

who walks toward the Ally
     walks in beauty
