Albert  Einstein
soundbite: explaining E=mc² {54 sec.} |            | short profile |
Albert Einstein was born 14 March 1879 in Ulm, Germany. He became a Swiss citizen in 1901, and taught physics at Berne, Prague, Zurich and Berlin, while continuing his research. Although his most famous papers were his June 1905 Special Theory of Relativity {a theory of light} and his 1916 General Theory of Relativity {a theory of gravity}, he won the Nobel Prize in 1921 for his May 1905 paper on the photoelectric effect. A fourth paper in the German journal Annalen der Physik in September 1905 actually was the first to specify and define the famous mass energy equivalence E=mc² formula.
A controversy has arisen about credit for the Theory of Relativity, even to accusations against Einstein for plagiarism. What seems to be the case is that in 1904 and 1905 there was a fervent race to lecture and to publish on the matter. Einstein and his wife Mileva Maric were aware of the work of French physicist Jean Henri Poincaré [1854-1912], which referenced a paper published in February 1904 by Dutch physicist Hendrik Lorentz [1853-1928]. Poincaré's 'short paper' was published 3 months before Einstein's, with the expanded 'long paper' published in July 1905. Part of the controversy derives from the fact that Einstein includes no citations of prior work, but it is also possible that his work was quite original.
The further race to complete the General Theory included a friendly competition with German physicist David Hilbert [1862-1943].
Ultimately, Einstein was the first to produce a complete theory, and that theory has stood the test of time.
In 1933 Einstein fled Nazi Germany with his family, arriving in America as a refugee in October. He was courted by many universities, spent some time at Cal Tech in California, and then accepted a permanent post at Princeton University in New Jersey. He was very upset about the atomic bomb used to end World War II, and became a pacifist. He died of heart failure 18 April 1955 in Princeton, New Jersey at the age of 76.
Albert Einstein's fame has not diminished and he lives on as an icon, seen around the world as both the absent-minded professor and as Time Magazine's 'Person of the Century' [December 1999]. Lately, the Einstein image & lore has been very evident, in celebration of his important publications in the 1905 'Year of Wonders'.
