The new Chinawood Global Services Base in Binhai New Area outside of Beijing in Tianjin Province (announced 4/2012) is touted as Chinas largest filmed
entertainment & media hub. Bruno Wus Seven Stars Entertainment and the local government are investing over $12.7 billion, including a new film
financing fund, in an ambitious plan for a new facility that will be dedicated to East-West co-productions; there has been no news since Spring 2012 (2013).
Ground-breaking ceremonies for the Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis in east China's Shandong province took place in September 2013. Wang Jianlin (China's richest man and owner of giant conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group) plans to spend 50 billion yuan ($8.2 billion) to build a state-of-the-art film studio and tourism complex in a bid to dominate China's rapidly-growing movie market. The facility will have 20 sound stages, including a permanent underwater studio, and a 10,000 square-meter (108,000 square-feet) stage that will be the world's biggest, as well as an Imax research & development center; the first phase is planned to open in June 2016 and be fully operational by June 2017. Planned tourist attractions include multi-screen cinemas, China's biggest film & celebrity wax museum, a yacht marina, eight hotels, and a theme park.
(Dalian Wanda operates cinemas, hotels & department stores in China, and bought the U.S. cinema chain A.M.C. for $2.6 billion in 2012.)
