"The Mad Doctor's Drive: Being An Account of The First Auto Trip Across The U.S.A. - San Francisco To New York 1903, Sixty-Three Days On A Winton Motor Carriage" [1964] by Ralph Nading Hill [1917-87]
While visiting the San Francisco Club, Dr. H. Nelson Jackson of Vermont took on a $50 wager to prove that automobiles were not just a fad and that he could drive across the continent in one; he acquired a travel partner/mechanic, a used Winton Touring Car, some supplies, and a map and set out on May 23: wanting to avoid the Nevada & Utah deserts, they took a northern route, going to Sacramento, Oregon, Idaho (where they added a dog to the team), and Wyoming; they arrived in Omaha, Nebraska on July 12; from that point roads were often paved and they entered New York City on July 26. He and his wife drove home to Vermont, and after having replaced almost all the other mechanical parts of the vehicle on the cross-country journey, the drive chain snapped as they pulled up to their house.   | "By Motor To The Golden Gate" [1916] by Emily Post [1863-1960] 52-year-old Emily Post was commissioned in 1915 by Collier's Magazine to cross the United States on the Lincoln Highway and write about it; her son Edwin drove, and her cousin Alice joined them; the book is the fascinating story of her pioneering drive from New York to San Francisco in a period Mercedes, with a complete log of the trip and photo-graphs & maps. The trip diverted from the Lincoln Highway in Wyoming and went south to Denver, Taos, the Grand Canyon, and California (Riverside, Santa Barbara, Monterey, and San Francisco & the Pan-American Exposition). {2004 edition is Edited with Introduction by Jane Lancaster} 1916 facsimile Kindle Edition from Amazon Digital Services [6/2011] for $2.99 HardPress Publng 9x6 pb [1/2013] for $15.95 Franklin Classics 9¼x6 pb [10/2018] for $17.95 McFarland & Co. 9x5¾ pb [7/2004] for $22.50 D.
