G.E. Nordell's U.S.A. Travel & Business Links Pages

  • 1770: The history of the car starts with the introduction of the first self-propelled vehicle by Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot [1725-1804] around the year 1769-1771;
    Cugnot was a French inventor widely credited for his invention of the Fardier a Vapeur steam-powered vehicle.  click here for photograph (in a new window)
  • 1862 May 16: Belgian-born Jean Joseph Etienne Lenoir [1822-1900] demonstrated the first automobile with an internal combustion engine, near Paris, France;
    the first trip of 10 kilometers (just over 6 miles) took 2 to 3 hours to complete. Lenoir's 1863 adaptation, the Hippomobile, was a 3-wheeled vehicle that traveled
    the 7 miles from Paris to Joinville-le-Pont and back, taking 90 minutes each way.  click here for photograph (in a new window)
  • 1899 May 20: The first recorded speeding arrest in U.S. history: Taxi driver Jacob German was pulled over in his electric car on Manhattan's Lexington Avenue
    by a police officer riding a bicycle; the charge was doing twelve mph in the posted 8 mph zone.
