The earliest American comic strips included "The Little Bears" [189396], "Hogan's Alley (with The Yellow Kid)" [from 1894],
"The Katzenjammer Kids" [since 1897], Winsor McCay's "Little Nemo in Slumberland" [1905-14], "Mutt and Jeff" [1907-82],
"Krazy Kat" [1913-44], Frank King's "Gasoline Alley" [since 1918], and Harold Gray's "Little Orphan Annie" [1924-2010].
The beginning of the 'Golden Age' of comic strip art is considered to be 1929, a year that saw the start of "Tarzan", "Buck Rogers",
"Popeye", "Napoleon", and (in Belgium) "Tintin". "Blondie" arrived in 1930, and "Dick Tracy" in 1931.
"Flash Gordon", "Jungle Jim", Dashiell Hammett's "Secret Agent X-9", Al Capp's "Li'l Abner", "Mandrake the Magician",
and "Terry & The Pirates" all began in 1934, and "The Phantom" began in 1936.

Classics Illustrated Junior entry at Wikipedia
The Classics Illustrated series of comic books based on American & other literature began in 1941, and continued thru the 1970s, with several spinoff series,
such as "Classics Illustrated Junior" (fairy tales); the main series stopped publication in 1971, but Gilberton still exists as holder of all rights. The several recent
attempts to restart publication of the various series have fizzled, the latest being Papercutz of New York City.
