American  Literature  of  The  XIXth  Century
             | short history |
There are half a dozen 'Best 100 List' pages here at Spirit of America Bookstore, and it was fun coding those pages: I learned a lot. But the real purpose of such pages is presenting to the visitor works of fiction and of non-fiction, and even of poetry, that are considered important. Now it is my turn!
This page of books that I say qualify as 'American Literature' of the XIXth Century is paired with a similar page for the XXth Century.
(For the XXIst Century, go here.)

"A Tramp Across The Continent" [Scribner's 1892]
by Charles F. Lummis [1859-1928]
  | In 1884, Ohio newpaperman Charles Lummis accepted a job in the Far West town of Los Angeles, Cali-fornia and decided to journey there on foot. He sent dispatches of his adventures weekly, which were syndicated and became a huge national hit. The 3,500-mile journey took 143 days and when he arrived in Los Angeles, he was given a parade. The book of his articles and journal notes was published in 1892. { ‡:1930s & other editions have Prologue & Introduction by Dudley Chadwick Gordon.} Kindle Edition from Amazon Digital Services [6/2015] for 99’ Forgotten Books 9x6 pb [6/2017] for $13.57 Univ NE Press 8x5¼ pb [5/1982] for $24.95 Palala Press 9¼x6 hardcover [9/2015] for $25.95 ‡ Calvin Horn 9x5¾ hardcover [1969] out of print/used |

by James Fenimore Cooper [1789-1851]
While coding a Native American Film Festival Page for the 'Readers of The Purple Sage' Western Bookstore website, I discovered that "The Last of The Mohicans" is the only Native American-themed tale with multiple films made from it, and in fact, it was made three times as a silent short, three times as a silent feature (one in Germany), as a 1957 TV series, as four long-form TV movies, as three TV mini-series, and as eight sound feature films. The 'Last of The Mohicans' Section on that page was cut to its own page in Summer 2017.

Spirit of America Bookstore's American Transcendentalism Movement Page
"Transcendentalism was the New England movement of the 1830s and 1840s that brought together Romanticism in
literature and social reform in politics. Its partisans argued for the rights of women, the abolition of slavery, and, in some
cases, the socialization of labor and equal distribution of profits. They were Americas first avant-garde."
