The Decameron book by Giovanni Boccaccio - 1573 edition censored by Council of Trent   "The Decameron: The Human Comedy" [completed 1353, English publn 1620]
by Giovanni Boccaccio [1313-75]

In the mid-1300s, as the Black Death was decimating Europe, the Italian writer Boccaccio imagined an escape from the city by members of the aristocracy: seven young women and three eligible men retreat to the countryside, where they go for walks, drink, and sing. In real life, as much as 60 percent of the population in Boccaccio’s home town of Florence was dying in agony; in his alternative vision, the characters meet each day to share ten stories on a new theme. Not all of Boccaccio’s stories are successful, but together the stories made a mark: nearly 700 years after they were written, the Decameron remains “probably the [raunchiest] great book in the Western canon”.

Diary of Samuel Pepys book, 1660-1669  "The Diary of Samuel Pepys, 1660-1669" [written 1660-69, first publn 1825]
by Samuel Pepys, Esquire, FRS [1633-1703]

The detailed private diary that Londoner Samuel Pepys kept is one of the most important primary sources for the English Restoration period; it provides a combination of personal revelation and eye-witness accounts of great events, such as the Great Plague of London (1665-66) and the Great Fire of London (Sept 1666). The first published edition of the diary, edited by Lord Braybrooke, was released in two volumes in 1825; a second transcription by Mynors Bright was published in 1875-79; Henry B. Wheatley produced a new edition in 1893-1899, revised in 1926, with extensive notes and an index. The complete, unexpurgated, and definitive edition, edited & transcribed by Robert Latham & William Matthews, was published in London, and by the University of California Press, Berkeley, in nine vol-umes, along with separate Companion and Index volumes, over the years 1970-83.

Journal of the Plague Year book by Daniel Defoe  "A Journal of The Plague Year: Being Observations or Memorials of The Most Remarkable Occurences, As Well Publick as Private, Which Happened In London During The Last Great Visitation In 1665 - Written By A Citizen Who Continued All The While In London" [1722] by Daniel Defoe [1660?-1731]
Defoe was only five years old in 1665-66 when the Great Plague of London took place; the book was published under the initials H.F. and so is considered to be based on the journals of Defoe's uncle, Henry Foe, who, like 'H.F.', was a saddler who lived in the Whitechapel district of East London.

The Coming Plague book by Laurie Garrett  "The Coming Plague: Newly Emerging Diseases In A World Out of Balance" [1994]
New York Times bestseller by medical journalist Laurie Garrett

Author presents a history of epidemiology and skillfully illustrates the role of ecology, politics, and economics in worldwide healthcare, using numerous examples to emphasize the need for a global perspective in the management of disease – yellow fever, malaria, ebola, lassa fever, AIDS, legionnaires' disease, toxic shock syndrome – an in-depth discussion of the search for the causes of these and many other diseases. The tranquil days following the discovery of antibiotics are gone as drug-resistant strains of disease-causing organisms continue to reappear; the message is clear: we must drop our complacency and learn from past epidemics or face dire consequences
