The Christian New Testament
The Apostles did not leave a defined set of new scriptures; instead the canon of the New Testament developed over time. The Synod of Hippo Regius (council of bishops) listed
and approved a Christian Biblical canon in 393 C.E.; the Council of Carthage confirmed the earlier Christian Biblical canon in 419 C.E. and also added the Book of Revelation.

The Gospels
The Gospel of Mark probably dates from 66-70 C.E., Matthew and Luke from around AD 85-90 C.E., and the Gospel of John from 90-110 C.E. Matthew was written with the intention of convincing the Jews that Jesus fulfilled prophecies of the Messiah; Mark was written first, and was intended to strengthen the belief of already-converted followers; Luke was intended to be read aloud at meetings among educated Greek-speaking followers; John is disconnected from the three 'synoptic' (similar) gospels, telling different stories intended to confirm the pre-existing divinity of the teacher and messiah Jesus.

"Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary On The Whole Bible"
Nonconformist minister Matthew Henry [1662-1714] of County Cheshire, England wrote the well-known multi-volume "Exposition of The Old and New Testaments"
aka "The Complete Commentary" which provides an exhaustive verse-by-verse study of the Bible, covering the whole of the Old Testament, and the Gospels and Acts
in the New Testament [1708-10]. After Henry's death, thirteen fellow Nonconformist ministers finished the sixth volume of Romans through Revelation, partly based
on notes taken by Henry's hearers. The entire "Commentary" was re-edited by George Burder and John Hughes in 1811.
"Wesley's Notes On The Bible" [1754 & 1765]
John Wesley [1703-91] was the primary founder of the Methodist movement in opposition to the negativist Calvinism movement within the Church of England;
Wesley wrote, edited, or abridged some 400 publications, most notably his "Sermons", "Notes", and "Journals" books; "Notes On The New Testament" was published
in 1754 and "Notes On The Old Testament" was published in 1765.
