Gambling & Other Vices
While other states got tough on gambling in the 1920s and 1930s - California even shut down gambling ships off its coast - Nevada just never made gambling illegal – they regulated it. The Mob moved into Las Vegas by building the Flamingo Hotel and creating 'The Strip' in 1946, but were quickly suppressed – the state works very hard to keep the casinos honest, so that the Feds have no reason to interfere. Billionaire Howard Hughes [1905-76] took up residence at the Las Vegas Desert Inn Hotel in 1965, bought five other casino-hotels, and altered the way that casinos did business. The Nevada gaming industry has recently suffered from competition by the many Indian casinos around the country, and also from the G.O.P. Economic Meltdown of 2008.
Still, the state of Nevada reported $11.1 billion in gaming revenue (taxes) for 2013.

Likewise, Nevada has not made prostitution illegal, possibly due to the state's heritage as a population of miners, railroaders, and loggers.
The state has, however, required health checks of brothel employees since 1937. In 1971, Clark County convinced the state legislature to make
prostitution illegal in any county with a population above a certain number (meaning them); that law now covers Clark (Las Vegas), Washoe (Reno),
Douglas & Lincoln counties, and the state capitol of Carson City.
