Miguel  de  Cervantes  y  Saavedra |               |
                | short profile |                     |
After an early life full of adventures, Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra [1547-1616] settled down in Madrid and began writing on the side;
his first novel, "La Galatea" was published in 1585, his second was published twenty years later: "Don Quixote, Part I" in 1605 and "Part II" in 1615;
"The Trials of Persiles and Sigismunda" was published posthumously in 1617. "Don Quixote" is widely regarded as a founding work of Western literature,
often labeled 'the first modern novel', and many scholars & critics consider it to be the best literary work ever written.
          On his return to Spain, Miguel found his family more impoverished than before. Supporting his mother, two sisters, and an illegitimate daughter, he settled down while attempting a literary career; he had hopes of becoming a successful playwright, but just then the youthful Lope de Vega [1562-1635] entered triumphantly to transform the Spanish theatre by his genius. Miguel married Catalina de Palacios y Salazar Vozmediano in 1585, and also published "La Galatea", a pastoral romance, in that same year. But publication did not bring him an escape from poverty, and he was forced to become a roving commissary for the Spanish armada, a venture that lasted for fifteen years and led to bankruptcy and jail.
          Although he never knew prosperity, Cervantes did gain a measure of fame during his lifetime, and Don Quixote and Sancho Panza were known all over the world. Part I of "Don Quixote" was published in 1605; in 1613, his "Exemplary Novels" appeared, and these picaresque tales of romantic adventure gained immediate popularity. "Journey To Parnassas", a satirical review of his fellow Spanish poets, appeared in 1614, and Part II of "Don Quixote" in 1615; "Eight Plays and Eight Interludes" was also published in 1615. The novel "The Trials of Persiles and Sigismunda" was published posthumously in 1617.
          Miguel de Cervantes died on 23 April 1616, the same day as the death of William Shakespeare - his English contemporary and his only peer.
